Reaction Emoji Discussion

The current reaction emoji are as follows: ,,,,, and the heart which has special function. While this is okay I think it could be better. For comparison, GitHub has ,,,,,,,.

I was initially going to say I liked over however I could see how might ‘steps on the toes’ of more so I’m not so sure how I feel about that anymore, but I would like to know what other people think about this. However I have more to say.

I rather like and , the first for celebration (in practice distinct from ) and the second for expressing suprise or interest (often a useful function if something new is brought up). It reads a lot less sarcastically than so suggest that be replaced with it.

I am a prolific reactor but I suppose that can be replaced more formally by in most cases, just thought it would be relevant to note that it’s my most used on discord that’s not represented, along with ,,. I don’t know the rough number of emoji we’re targetting.

I’m not convinced of the necessity of . From observing its use elsewhere it doesn’t seem to have a strong meaning so I don’t know if it would be very useful, I suggest we drop it.

In all, my initial suggestion is to change the set of emoji to ,,(| ),,,. Interested in others’ thoughts!

and could also replace and . I do like , and you’re right that isn’t really a good emote. Overall I do want to keep the total number of reacts to a minimum, and only include emojis that have a relatively unambiguous meaning.

I like having as a way to express shock or surprise, without necessarily having much of a positive or negative connotation.

For now I’ve removed , and added , so now we have

: dislike

I’m willing to add more if they have a relatively unique, unambiguous, and useful meaning. Seeing which reacts get the most and least over time will be useful as well, like if one react gets used in several different cases that is a good reason to add a new react.
