A suggestion from @tildejustin, who prefers Bluesky’s feature of making profiles only viewable for logged in users.
You can view someones profile by clicking on their username/profile picture. It shows information that you have given about yourself, including user inputted location, as well as all of your posts across all your threads, along with some other miscellaneous information like your badges.
This can be disabled individually for yourself by going into your profiles > preferences > preferences > Hide my public profile. However, this hides your profile from everyone and is not user customizable.
The Hide user profiles from public setting has the description of Disable user cards, user profiles and user directory for anonymous users. This makes me think that it will be a global setting, and not toggleable per user. Should this be the case? Ideally the experience of using frontcage logged out shouldn’t be degraded too much.
Preferably each user would be able to have multiple profile visibility settings, ranging from fully private to fully public, but that doesn’t seem to be a built in option.
I assume that this will be a global setting for all users, and was implied when I made the suggestion. As for the user experience of a user who is not logged in, their experience will not be hindered and the only thing I can think of that might be an annoyance to a logged out guest will be that they will not be able to click on a member’s profile and look at all of the posts they have made in other threads. This might be useful if someone wants to find a specific post by a member but in my opinion the search tool is a better option in that case.
That’s my opinion! Feel free to keep things as they are or make a poll if necessary. This is not a must have setting, as the user can already hide their profile, but it would be nice to have.
yeah, I really want to keep the signed out experience as similar as possible to the signed in experience, and checking someone’s account for whatever reason is a pretty common thing someone might want to do whether or not they’re signed in.
To be clear I’m not putting my foot down or anything, if anyone else wants to voice their opinion or make a stronger case go ahead, I want to do whatever more people want to be done here.
